WASHINGTON, D.C., April 29, 2014 — Communication students at American University gain hands-on experience with the tools of their future professions through a unique collaboration with Sony Electronics. The University’s new Media Innovation Lab (MIL) is outfitted with Sony high-definition broadcast and production equipment, from 4K and business projectors to studio cameras to production switchers.

The new Sony technologies are key components of the AU School of Communication’s (SOC) recent upgrade, consolidating its operations from six spaces across campus into the newly restored McKinley Building. With the renovation complete and the products installed, the SOC is now even more fully equipped to carry out its mission of preparing students for careers in the communications and digital media industries.

The school’s use of Sony technology demonstrates how new A/V technologies can fit across a college campus, from general lecture hall presentation, live event production and interactive classrooms to research, video production, and even video surveillance.

Sony and American University officially unveiled the new spaces with a series of events on April 28 and 29, highlighting the range of new Sony technologies and featuring high-profile guest speakers including Academy Award-winning cinematographer Claudio Miranda.

“This collaboration between American University and Sony Electronics represents a dynamic relationship that advances the strategic objectives of two great institutions,” said AU President Neil Kerwin. “We are pleased to have the School of Communication partner with Sony and we look toward future productive endeavors.”

In addition to the MIL and the 145-seat Malsi Doyle and Michael Forman Theater, the updated McKinley Building now houses 10 specialized classrooms, multi-purpose learning spaces, office and work space for approximately 100 faculty and staff, and six computer labs supporting digital imaging, online content creation, motion graphics, multichannel audio, and full HD video editing.

“I can’t imagine a better partner for the School of Communication than Sony,” said Dr. Jeffrey Rutenbeck, dean of American University, School of Communication. “Their technologies and their expertise are supporting a transformation in the world of media, and we are excited that our students and faculty can be a part of it.”
Sony worked closely with systems integrator Communications Engineering, Inc. (CEI) on the American University project.

“American University is positioning itself at the forefront of technology and education,” said Theresa Alesso, vice president, business-to-business applications, Sony Electronics’ Professional Solutions of America group. “Having access to state-of-the-art HD production equipment – the same equipment used by professionals today – makes the students’ educational experience more dynamic and relevant. We are excited and proud to be working with American University as they continue to develop the careers of media professionals.”
