Automated intelligent switched telepresence is an automated system that accounts for the way humans visually relate to the world. Legacy videoconferencing for group conferencing has been a very frustrating experience. With manual control of the camera’s pan and tilt, the person with the remote control is constantly trying to the keep the particular person speaking on screen. The whole experience is like watching novices making a really bad cable access TV show. At first it is almost comical, then it becomes irritating. Most people get so frustrated they wide zoom out the camera and leave it there. With wide zoom, people appear tiny on the screen. Both approaches are not Telepresence and are distracting to the natural flow of conversation. Some companies try to get around this problem with life-size continuous presence systems with 6-8 people on multiple plasmas or giant projection screens. Though well-intentioned these solutions are riddled with problems. The sheer expense is out of reach for most companies. The cost limits the number of potential rooms that could be deployed. Hence, conferencing is limited to a few high-end rooms. Lastly, the human factors of large screens and multiple screens with multiple cameras are greatly flawed. Multiple cameras do not accurately deliver the sensation of true eye contact and accurate head gaze direction. Approximate direction is not good enough. If someone is looking away even 5, 10, 15 degrees we know they are not looking at us. Approximate eye contact is not eye contact. So, with these expensive continuous presence systems one must excuse the technology and suspend the expectation to have natural and normal conversation. The technology intrudes on human interaction and nonverbal communication is inaccurately presented and interpreted. DVE is highly focused on the Art and Science of Telepresence which is a multidisciplinary approach that involves engineering, psychology, and the art of broadcast production. We are a television watching generation. We have become habituated to seeing images transitioning between scenes the way it is done on the evening news, movies, commercials, and TV shows. There is a reason why there are cut transitions between people when they are conversing. The reason is simple. It works and it works extremely well. In many ways it mimics the way humans see the world. We focus our eyes and our attention instantaneously, as if a directed TV cut, to various scenes of attention. Sitting around a table with many people, a person can shift their eye focus on a new scene of attention dozens of times in a single minute. This is the fundamental way humans visually relate to the world. Also, the function of blinking is a physiological response to permit the eyes to transition between scenes of focused attention, again much like a directed cut in television. The blink helps transition the eye to the new scene of attention without having to process the movement to the new scene of attention. DVE’s Intelligent Switched Telepresence is an automated system that accounts for the way humans visually relate to the world. Features include one-step set-up, individual user over-ride per seat, voice activation, integration with multipoint switching, and dynamic scene interpretation (such as default settings to a wide shot or a certain seat when no one is conversing).
