When Rogers Communications Inc. launched the heavily automated, multi-zone CityNews Channel in Fall 2011, the Audience software platform provided by Capital Networks was chosen as the content creation and management system for the 24-hour news channel. The new all-news channel features local, national and international stories with an emphasis on traffic, weather, sports and business updates that follow the popular news-wheel schedule already incorporated at sister radio station 680 News. Content is provided by a series of automated data feeds as well as a variety of Rogers media partners including 680 News, SportsNet, Canadian Business, Maclean's and MoneySense. Popular news programs Breakfast Television and CityNews are also simulcast on the new CityNews Channel. “Building upon the success of the 24-hour local news format that Citytv initially created, CityNews Channel combines a wealth of resources from across all of Rogers Media to bring viewers the most informative and all-encompassing news experience,” said Tina Cortese, vice-president, news and general manager of Citytv Toronto, a unit of Rogers Media.“ With this proven wheel format, viewers know precisely when to tune in for the news they want, when they want it.” Along with a combination of live and pre-recorded video, the CityNews Channel multi-zone layout provides viewers instant access to weather forecasts, the latest headlines, live traffic updates as well as real-time commentary provided by Twitter and Facebook feeds, with the Audience platform enabling content to be scheduled independently within each zone or linked to content in other zones as desired. Other requirements filled by the Audience software platform included advanced “command and control” features to accommodate breaking news, broadcast quality animation support and advanced data automation. Capital Networks provided consultation, production and technical support services to Rogers Communications Inc. during the planning and deployment of CityNews Channel.
