Barco’s realistic audio solution finally makes training systems complete
Posted on Tuesday, May 16, 2017
Kortrijk, Belgium, 16 May 2017 - Global expert in visualization technology for the simulation market, Barco, has expanded its offering with an innovative audio system for simulation. At ITEC 2017, Barco will demonstrate AudioCue − a solution that adds high-quality and precise audio cues to simulation systems. Combining deep knowledge of the simulation market with vast expertise in 3D audio for cinema and virtual reality applications, Barco is the perfect partner to deliver a premium simulation sound experience.

An engaging and true-to-life scenario is key to guaranteeing fast reactions when training for a mission in a simulation environment. Up to now, training environments have not realized the benefits of high-quality, real-life audio cues − yet, the demand for improved realism in training is increasing. Adding true-to-life audio cues heightens the realistic feeling of the simulation system and, when combined with Barco’s world-class projection technology, improves the impact of the training dramatically.

The high-quality, precise audio cues allow trainees to pinpoint objects and occurrences before they are within visual range, greatly contributing to faster decision-making and a trained, educated reaction pattern when a situation is at its most critical state. The result is a system that increases the awareness and effectiveness of training, better answering the needs of a wide variety of training and simulation markets, including ground training (rescue, security, direct combat, etc.), urban, JTAC, and healthcare.

3D sound: a new layer in training

real-time 3D audio for simulation and training systemsBarco AudioCue uses the patented IOSONO CORE processing system, a unique solution providing the most advanced real-time rendering of sound in the simulation market. Depending on an object’s virtual location, Barco AudioCue renders sound on the spot, instead of mixing and delivering to a specified channel. This generates audio cues from the exact location that the object should be relative to the trainee's position. Conventional channel-based systems don't offer this precision, making the training programs rigid and far less realistic.

Barco AudioCue provides environment designers with great flexibility by allowing for as many speakers as needed. The Barco AudioCue processor supports speaker arrangements from 8 to 128 audio channels − customized to any room, shape or other constraint − so that the sound rendering is based on the exact position of the speakers and not on a pre-defined layout. What's more, there is no auditory 'sweet spot' in the system, which eliminates the risk of negative training. Barco’s immersive audio solution includes hardware and software processing capabilities that seamlessly integrate into any existing content or IG setup.

Teaming up for ITEC 2017

Barco AudioCue gives us a depth of realism not offered by any other systems provider in the industry.

At ITEC 2017, Barco and QuantaDyn will demonstrate the power of immersive audio with the first fully integrated Barco AudioCue system to be demonstrated to the industry. “We have been working with Barco for many years, and they have always proven to be a reliable technology partner,” says Bill Dunn, President at QuantaDyn. “We are very excited about adding Barco AudioCue, the newest dimension of their simulation capability, to our system, as it gives us a depth of realism not offered by any other systems provider in the industry.”

Barco AudioCue will be showcased at ITEC (16-18 May, at Ahoy in Rotterdam, The Netherlands). Visit the Barco booth (#44) for a lively discussion, or the QuantaDyn booth (#18) for a demo and more information.
