Jupiter Systems and Utility Operators

Oct. 28, 2020 - As everything in our world gets more complex, the role of your local utility company could be at the top of that list. With denser population centers, we see massive increases in demand for resources like gas and electricity. This is due to every new home having ever larger air conditioning systems and more and more people with an electric car in their driveway. Additionally, the consequences of a warming climate mean that we run the AC more hours and days of the year. And as we are all aware of, both the electrical grid and the underground gas infrastructure is getting older. So monitoring and maintenance becomes more critical every year.

Jupiter is located in northern California and a few years ago we became very aware of the challenges that our electrical operators face when it was brought to light that an old transmission wire broke in high winds and caused a large fire. As a note, before you think to "blame" that operator, they have over 81,000 miles of overhead power lines to monitor! (50,000 miles of Gas lines as well!) As a result, monitoring these systems for power fluctuations that might be related to an issue, ensuring they shut lines down in high winds, and even watching gas pipes when there is an earthquake... is an almost insurmountable job. They have an almost unfathomable amount of data to process and evaluate. Add in the last remaining nuclear power station in California, and you can see that this is a truly daunting task.

Talking all this data, systems, and all the things that can affect them and putting it all together in a way that allows insights to be drawn, decisions to be made, and actions taken is where Jupiter comes in. A utility company does not exist in a single location. They have multiple operation centers that drive their individual systems, but all feed up the chain so that the entire picture can be seen. With Jupiter's unique architecture, customers are able to deploy smaller Catalyst processors in smaller facilities, make use of the best in class Catalyst XL in large facilities, and make use of the Canvas platform to ensure that mobile teams have both the vision they need as well feed up the chain to ensure regional visibility as needed. On top of this, as emergencies arise, they can quickly share content with emergency services on the ground.

What this all means is that the utility operator has the flexibility and scale to meet any situation that their equipment, or even mother nature throws at them.

Jupiter has been working with utilities all over the world for decades. We know what is needed and can help you present solutions to these customers that will exceed both their requirements and their expectations.
