Oct. 28, 2020 - As everything in our world gets more complex, the role of your local utility company could be at the top of that list. With denser population centers, we see massive increases in demand for resources like gas and electricity. This is due to every new home having ever larger air conditioning systems and more and more people with an electric car in their driveway. Additionally, the consequences of a warming climate mean that we run the AC more hours and days of the year. As a note, before you think to "blame" that operator, they have over 81,000 miles of overhead power lines to monitor! (50,000 miles of Gas lines as well!) As a result, monitoring these systems for power fluctuations that might be related to an issue, ensuring they shut lines down in high winds, and even watching gas pipes when there is an earthquake... is an almost insurmountable job. They have an almost unfathomable amount of data to process and evaluate. Add in the last remaining nuclear power station in California, and you can see that this is a truly daunting task.
Talking all this data, systems, and all the things that can affect them and putting it all together in a way that allows insights to be drawn, decisions to be made, and actions taken is where Jupiter comes in.
