"RAW"is one of the file formats used by digital cameras to record photographs. When recording photographs in JPEG and other similar formats, the camera automatically processes the images to create a photograph that is ready to view on a PC or other devices; in contrast, RAW images are "raw", completely untouched data that require further processing to become true photographs, which is similar to developing silver-halide films shot with film cameras.
The advantages in developing RAW files are that it allows extensive image editing without concerning about degrading image quality: You can alter the white balance or adjust exposure after shooting, and fine-tuning images using Picture Control will not compromise image quality. The finished images can be output in 16-bit TIFF files while retaining smooth gradation.

RAW processing depends heavily on the algorithms employed in the image-processing applications you use. The Capture NX-D software employs a RAW processing engine developed by Nikon. Exposure compensation, white balance, and Picture Control tools are available only with RAW (NEF/NRW) images. Exposure compensation also offers an Active D-Lighting option that prevents loss of detail in highlights and shadows

Capture NX-D offers Image Dust Off, a feature that effectively reduces the effect of dust and other foreign objects on photographs. The camera records a reference image ("Image Dust Off data") that maps the location of dust on the low-pass filter (or on the optical filter, in the case of cameras without a low-pass filter). Subsequent photographs can automatically be compared to the reference image to mitigate the effects of dust

Each tool has its own floating palette that can be positioned anywhere in the display. You can use two monitors to secure a large space for the image area. Palettes can be merged and moved together
